Watercolor portrait tutorial - Girl in Pink

Wow it has been a long time since I have done one of these little tutorials/ paint alongs. Yesterday I thought I would paint up a little girl. I had no real person in mind, I just started with a basic line drawing getting her perspectives down and picking out my pallett of hmmm.... lets see... quin gold, perm red and cobalt blue, opera and i will toss a little burnt umber in at the end. Lets start by wetting her face and dropping in some color to get a base of where we want to go with this. At this point I will be working with only my yellow and red remember to work around your lights. Still working wet in wet and building up light layers of my yellow and reds all the time thinking about where the sun will hit her face. You will see I added just a dab of burnt umber to place the eyes. Dont forget to leave the highlights. Continue building up your layers of sunshine, but now it is time to start thinking about how and where your facial structures recede. The eye sockets and sides of t

Namibian Girl - Artist Trading Card

How can you tell when the Holiday season has started??? By the amount of guests in your home. ;) LOL Another set has gone and just enough time to get sheets washed and put back on before the next set of guests arrive. I think I will need to fit in a NAP sometime in there. This is one I finished at 4am but have been waiting for the snow to clear before I could get a good picture. It is an ACEO 2.5 * 3.5 inch watercolor on 140lb CP paper. Hope you enjoy.  SOLD Tammy

10 min Ladies - abstract portraits

Good Morning All. Ive had the luxury of the kids sleeping in this morning so I got a few 10 min portraits done. I am actually very pleased in how they came out. They are bright, fresh.. and the best part they actually look human. ;) 2.75 *2.75 in acrylic on mini stretched canvas 3 * 3.75 in acrylic on 600lb rough watercolor paper On a side note, My wonderful husband has been modeling for me over the past few weekends, I started out with 3 - 15 min sessions of quick sketches.. which turned out so good, he has allowed me to paint him from life. I have never done anything like this and it is so exciting. :) After a 1 hour session - from sketch to blocking in local color - it already looks like him. I hope to get a picture today while it is nice outside and get it up sometime this weekend. Hope you enjoy

From my sketchbook - portraits

I swear I was born with a pencil in my hand, as my first love will always be drawing. Growing up I really never got much encouragement to pursue my passion for art so out of necessity to get rid of all of this creative energy it was for the most part me and my pencil. I have about 25 sketchbooks scattered around my house, stuck in my purse, hiding in my glove box.. lol, but they are available at any time for my amusement. So I thought I would share a few of my portrait practices while I get back to painting. Hope you enjoy

Brown Hair Woman - ATC

I heard the most thought provoking thing this week when it came to painting portraits. "Every skin tone is made up of the 3 primaries - yellow, red and blue. The only thing that makes us differant is the amount of water used.: I wish I can remember where I heard it, because it has so much truth to it. When i paint people, I use variations of the just the 3 primaries This is the latest in my portrait trading card series and was created using raw sienna, rose madder and cobalt blue. I love her little smirk, it adds a little something to an otherwise dull portrait. Hope you enjoy. 2.5 * 3.5 inch format watercolor on 140lb CP Click Here For Auction!

Trying to loosen up Watercolor Portrait Studies

SOLD I have been working on "loosening up" and "get it right the first time" direct approach to painting in watercolors. Not an easy task as watercolors dry alot lighter so when you look at dark thick masses of color on your pallette it is kind of scary. :D These are small quick studies Angelic study 3.75 * 5.25 inch on 140lb CP is done using a limited pallett of Burnt Sienna, aureolin and paynes grey Venus Abstract 3.5 * 5.25 inch watercolor on 140lb CP Hope this inspires you to step outside your comfort zone and experiment a little. Tammy

Chimpanzee in pencil - mini demo

Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. I put together this mini demo on how I work in pencil to achieve the different textures on this monkey drawing. 5 * 7 inch chimpanzee in graphite on copy paper aprox 4 hours. I wish I would have done him on better paper, but i have stuck him in a frame and he hangs proudly on my wall. :) Start with a basic line drawing blocking on major shapes and patterns. Work around your subject comparing one area against the next, varying your pencil strokes to represent the changes in textures you are drawing. The hair would be done in long, wispy strokes and the face would be done in more of a confined circular stroke, avoiding harsh lines but varying value. Final touches are then added and or subtracted from your subject.

Rosetti with a side of Klimt

So after pulling out one of my art history books I decided to do a masters painting with a twist. I chose my color pallet based on Klimt and the image is my rendition of Rosetti's Venus. I have a big empty space above my stairs that has been crying out for something for quite a while. This is a work in progress but it shows where I am trying to go with this. Hope you enjoy. Tammy
